After a year of delays, Illinois is moving towards issuing new dispensary licenses while other Midwest states’ cannabis legislation efforts are stalling.
Our new Midwest news partner, Grown In, reports that and Illinois state legislature cannabis working group has drafted a bill that creates 75 new dispensary licenses to be issued this year – on top of 75 other licenses stuck in lawsuits against the state. Currently, Illinois has only 89 cannabis dispensaries, despite zooming past $1 billion in sales in its first year of legal recreational sales.
Meanwhile, efforts to make recreational legal in Missouri are meeting a conservative buzzsaw. Plans in Michigan to merge the state’s unique two-track medical and recreational licensing system are also hitting delays, as the state wrestles with Covid-related priorities.
